A Postcard from Juliet‘For never was a story of more woe than this of Juliet and her Romeo…’
This programme inspired by the Bel Canto tradition explores the lyrical melodies of
Mozart, Verdi and Bellini to the film scores of Legrand and Bernstein,
recounting the infamous tale of the two star crossed lovers.

Gayle Walker currently studies with lyric soprano Madeleine Holmes and has attended masterclasses in Cambridge with Katharina Megli and with Sarah Leonard at Benslow Music. More recently she was delighted to have the opportunity to attend the Veneto Opera Summer School with Melofonetica performing as part of the Arte Lirica Festival 2024.

Gayle is a classical soprano with a broad range of choral and solo experience; she has performed with The Gabrieli Choir Budapest, Oxford based chamber ensemble The Cherwell Singers, and has also had the pleasure of joining a larger group performing alongside BBC Elstree Concert Band at Dorchester Music Festival in 2017. She holds a bachelor of music degree with honours from Aberdeen University and has had private vocal lessons since the age of 14. As a soloist, her repertoire is diverse ranging from popular operatic arias, art song, musical theatre ballads and American Songbook standards. Gavin Roberts enjoys an extraordinarily varied
career as a pianist, organist and conductor. He has appeared at venues and festivals in the UK and abroad. He is a professor and staff pianist at the Guildhall School of Music & Drama and is the Artistic Director of Song in the City. Gavin has collaborated with numerous singers, conductors, instrumentalists and ensembles including The BBC Singers, The Academy of Ancient Music, The National Youth Choir and Constanza Chorus, often appearing on radio broadcasts and recordings.
Gavin is an experienced and creative concert programmer, including five successful seasons as Artistic Director of The St Marylebone Festival. His work is often characterised by collaborations with other artistic disciplines. Recent work includes a choreographed performance of Schubert’s Wintereise at RAMBERT, and a London Fashion Week show for designer Patrick McDowell at Guildhall School. He has been Artistic Director of Song in the City since 2011 for which he has devised more than 150 concerts, and has pioneered ‘Creative Minds in Song’ commissioning composers to create new songs on the poems of mental-health service users.
